Counselling for Men Birmingham

Normalising men's mental health

About Counselling for Men

My name is Andrew Abernethy and the good news is that you've just taken the first brave step in making positive changes to your life.

I started Counselling for men as I started to recognise the help that Men of all ages need. The number of male suicides is an epidemic that needs to be healed and so I've dedicated my continual personal development in the world of Male mental health.

Seeking counselling can be scary. It’s a brave thing to pursue. I understand that leaving the house may induce high anxiety for you, or that you find it hard to open up, you might have been taught that Men don’t cry or share their problems.

But once you've made that step you will feel much better for it, counselling can be life changing.

Counselling with an experienced counsellor who offers a unique approach to counselling that will help you in becoming the best version of you.

  • Diploma in Humanistic Counselling
  • BACP Registered
  • Over 4000 hours counselling experience
  • Registered counsellor for Health Assured Employee Assistance Program
  • Youth Information Services counsellor
  • Autism support worker for 8 years.

Why do Men stay unhappy for so long without asking for help?

Often we’ll have been raised to not show emotions and we’re told it’s a sign of weakness. By not showing our emotions the feelings are inwardly repressed and come out externally, often as depression and anger.

Sometimes the pressures of life can be too much for our minds to cope with, it only takes one or two areas of our life to fall out of sync and our emotional cup starts to overflow.

Seeking counselling can be scary. It’s a brave thing to pursue and it can be life changing. We were given tear ducts for a reason because Men need to Cry also.

I give you a safe space to tell me as little or as much as you like, you tell me what you hope to achieve from counselling and I will tailor my skill set to help you set and achieve goals.

From counselling Men I have noticed recurring themes or subjects:

- Low self-esteem

- Low mood / Depression

- Work Related Stress

- Work / Life balance

- Lack of access to a child

- Relationship issues

- Sex and sexuality concerns -Bereavement

-Dating anxiety / frustrations

-Anger and irritability

- Isolation & loneliness

- Procrastination

- Imposter syndrome

I look forward to hearing from you so that I can book in your first session and start you on the road to a better life.

Although my main client base is male I am also happy to counsel women, so ladies please feel free to contact me.

Support

I use an integrative approach to counselling. The core approach that I use is person centred – I am empathic, genuine and open and accepting without judging.

I also encompass elements of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural therapy) and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) if I feel that you could benefit from these techniques.

I'm an open person in life and this is reflected in my counselling. Sometimes I have shared with client's how I have helped myself to move on. This has helped normalise the client's situation and has in turn helped them to also heal.

I’m described as warm and non-judgmental, sometimes I add humour to a session as this can break the ice and it allows a space for nervous energy and heaviness to be released.
